First to get three in a row wins!

Tic Tac Toe Online with Friends

The roots of Tic Tac Toe can be traced back to various game variants from the Roman Empire. It is a true classic game where each of the two players tries to get three of their X's or O's in a row.

The strategy game is also known by the names "Noughts and Crosses" or "Xs and Os". You can play this piece of gaming history here on PlayDodo online with your friends.

How to Play Tic Tac Toe

In Tic Tac Toe, players take turns placing an X or O in an empty square on the 3x3 game board.

The first player to get three of their marks in a row wins the game. It doesn't matter whether the crosses or circles are arranged horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

However, if all squares on the board are filled and no player has managed to get three of their marks in a row, the game ends in a draw.

The following image shows an example game of Tic Tac Toe:

As you can see above, the blue player X wins by connecting three of their marks horizontally.

Strategy and Tactics

Tic Tac Toe is considered a solved game. This means that if both players play optimally, the game always ends in a draw.

Nevertheless, there are a number of strategies and tactics you can use to improve your chances or at least force a draw.

When You Start

As the first player (you play "X"), you have a clear advantage. You can use it with this strategy:

  1. Start with your first X in any corner. Provided your opponent doesn't place their O in the center, you can continue with the strategy.

  2. Place your second X in the opposite corner. Which corner you choose doesn't matter – the important thing is that your opponent's O is not between your two marks.

  3. Place your third X in the last free corner, creating two different winning opportunities for yourself.

  4. Place your fourth X in the center. This allows you to win diagonally. If your opponent has already placed their O in the center, you can instead win along the sides.

If your opponent places their O in the center, you can still ensure a draw with this strategy.

The following GIF shows you the strategy described above:

When Your Opponent Starts

As the second player, it's harder to win Tic Tac Toe. If your opponent places their X in a corner at the start, you can apply this tactic:

  1. Place your O directly in the center. This disrupts their strategy most effectively.

  2. Your opponent will try to occupy the corners. You counter by placing your O between their already placed marks.

With this approach, depending on the course of the game, you can either win yourself or at least force a draw. In most cases, it ends in a draw. However, if your opponent makes a mistake, you can take the opportunity and get three in a row in the center of the board.

Other Game Variants

In addition to the classic version, there are some exciting variations of Tic Tac Toe.

One of them is "Super Tic Tac Toe". Here you don't play on a single 3×3 board, but on nine 3×3 fields. Each move determines which of the nine fields your opponent must play on next. This variant brings a completely new strategic dimension to the game.

Currently, this variant is not available on PlayDodo. That could change in the future!

Alternatively, you can also play Four in a Row. Here you need to get four pieces in a row instead of three. Have fun!
